In 1908, which was the end of the Guangxu reign, both sides of the Huangpu River were devastated. Imperialist warships and merchant ships were rampaging in the Huangpu River, and the small sampans of the boatman Chang Xingen were destroyed by British passenger ships. Chang Xingen was unable to make a living and had to be introduced to work in a shipyard, where he was oppressed by foreign bosses.
