In 1938, Chiang Kai shek opened the Yellow River embankment at Huayuankou in Zhengzhou to prevent the Japanese army from moving south, causing the river to flood and tens of thousands of people to be displaced. Heizi (played by Feng Zhe) from the Huai River Basin also lost his family. He made a living by begging for food and eating tree bark, which led him to meet Kuihua (played by Wang Bei), the maid of the Xiong 30000 (played by Bai Mu) family
