During the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, Crown Prince Zhu Changluo of the Eastern Palace and eunuch Zhang Cheng competed against each other in the court. The Crown Prince and his followers heard the prophecy of the Imperial Censor and decided to send someone to execute the eunuch surnamed Wei in the palace. Zhang Cheng saw a group of disciples being killed and conspired to assassinate the Crown Prince's unmarried wife Guo Qian, in order to retaliate and vent his anger.
